Lim A Po, Hans Rudolf (05-01-40) was born in Paramaribo, Suriname where he got his primary and secondary education. He studied law at the University of Leyden in the Netherlands from 1958 to 1963. His majors were Civil and Corporate Law and an optional subject was Corporate Finance. Mr. Lim A Po was in private law practice in Suriname from 1963 to1980. During that period he held various public and private positions including being chairman of the National Labour Mediation Board from 1967-1970, member of the first (1975) and chairman of the second Constitutional Committee (1980), member (from 1965) and chairman of the National Boundary Dispute Settlement Committee (1970-1980) and member and chairman of a number of non executive corporate boards. From 1965 – 1980 Mr Lim A Po lectured Contract Law at the University of Suriname and from 1975 Jurisprudence and Comparative Law as well. From 1978- 1980 he has been a member of the Faculty of the Caribbean Management Series of Seminars, a senior management course of the Centre Etude Industrielle of Geneva. In the period 1973-1980 he published various articles in the Suriname law review on Law and Social Change. Mr. Lim A Po joined Billiton International Metals in 1980 - at that time the mining arm of Royal Dutch Shell. His first position was Managing Director of Billiton Maatschappij Suriname. He was transferred to Billiton’s Central Office in 1986 and worked in The Hague from 1986-1996 in various positions including Deputy Head of Aluminium, Head of Mining and Head of Planning and Appraisal. His last position was in London where he was Group Legal Counsel for Billiton plc with worldwide legal responsibilities. After his retirement in March 2000 Mr. Lim A Po moved back to his home country to establish the F.H.R.Lim A Po Institute for Social Studies which has as its main objective serving the community as an academic and professional training-ground and platform for debate on societal issues. The institute conducts post-graduate courses in international relations and business management in association with The Netherlands Institute of International Relations Clingendeal, the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague and the Maastricht School of Management in the Netherlands. Research activities carried out by the Institute under Mr Lim A Po’s guidance were on Ethics of Poverty Reduction (on behalf of an umbrella NGO organisation), on Business Ethics (on behalf of the National Employers Association) and on the Social Dialogue (on behalf of the Government of Suriname). Current work includes consultancy as Land Policy and Legal Specialist (local) for the Government of Suriname and the Inter American-Development Bank. In June 2001 Mr Lim A Po became chairman of the Presidential Committee charged with drafting legislation for formation of a Social Economic Council en later in the same year he has been re-appointed chairman of the Suriname Boundary Commission. Mr Lim A Po also resumed lecturing of Civil Law at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname and became chairman and member of the Board of several private companies.
