NORMAN GIRVAN




Biographical note

Professor Norman Girvan took up office as Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States in February 2000 after his election by the Council of Ministers. He is a development economist by training and combines an academic background with experience in government and international organizations and extensive travel in the Latin American and Caribbean region. He received his B.Sc in economics from the University College of the West Indies (London University) in 1962 and his Ph.D. in economics from the London School of Economics in 1966.  From 1966 to 1977 he held teaching and research positions at the University of the West Indies and at the United Nations African Institute for Development and Planning in Dakar, Senegal. From 1977 to 1980 he was Chief Technical Director of the National Planning Agency in the Government of Jamaica. In 1981-1985 he worked as Senior Officer and Consultant at the United Nations Center on Transnational Corporations in New York. In 1985 he joined the Faculty of the Consortium Graduate School of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies in 1985 and was appointed Director, Professor in 1987 and in 1997, Professor of Development Studies. He has also held Visiting Fellowships at the Universities of McGill, Yale, Chile, and Sussex.
